Shifting to sustainable building materials

This is Shaping Sustainable Places, a new Skanska podcast. We’re here to recognize, encourage and inspire stakeholders in the industry and beyond to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable, resilient, zero-carbon built environment. In each episode, we’ll be speaking with industry and civic leaders, policymakers and other champions of change to explore innovative solutions to real challenges.

The built environment is responsible for 40% of energy-related CO2 emissions globally. And it just continues to grow, essentially adding one New York City each month with construction materials being the primary cause of emissions. This presents an incredible challenge. However, sustainable innovations in cement, steel, glass, and other materials can significantly move us forward on the journey toward low-carbon construction.

Today, host Charlie Cichetti is joined by three industry experts. They all have much to share about innovative and sustainable solutions in construction that support healthy living beyond our lifetime.

This episode features Lena Hök, EVP of Sustainability and Innovation at Skanska, Emmanuel Normant, VP for Sustainable Development at Saint-Gobain, and Magali Anderson, Chief Sustainability and Innovation Officer at Holcim. All of our guests discuss the various technological innovations that are helping to make construction more sustainable and less carbon-intensive:

  • Lena discusses the development of low-carbon/near-zero asphalt, the first of its kind in the world, and Skanska’s approach to low-carbon materials.
  • Emmanuel shares the challenges of encouraging the use of recycled materials in different countries.
  • Magali notes how commercial relationships will need to change to accommodate the use of more sustainable materials.
