Net zero emissions are a vital part of climate action targets. However, we also need to improve the use of global resources to reduce emissions and resource depletion. Put simply, we need to do more with less.
In this episode, we take a closer look at how materials that are commonly seen as waste can be turned into valuable resources and become an asset for businesses.
Anders Lendager founded Lendager Group in Copenhagen, Denmark, with the purpose of accelerating sustainable architecture: “We've developed a waste wood company. We've developed a waste window company. We developed a waste brick company where we are basically cutting whole buildings down and recycling 1x1 meter brick pieces and building new buildings with it. And I think all these things are leading towards something that society really wants and that it is something that can be scaled.”
On the supply side, Skanska Industrial Solutions provides asphalt, rock material, concrete, infrastructure services and rental equipment for the construction industry. And they are trying to scale up projects that focus on waste as a resource.
Barbro Brattström Grujovic, Business Developer with Skanska Sweden, says: “Although we are still only at the beginning, a viable ecosystem for circular materials in the construction industry does exist… We are expanding our [resource park] business all over Sweden … where controlled surplus material can be brought in, refined and used for new homes, infrastructure projects and other construction.”
